THE MIDNIGHT SUN

Endless Light

Summer at Brakøya

door

The world

Light that does not end. For weeks there is no true dark, the sea glimmers turquoise, mornings and evenings fold into one another, and the day has no edge. Open water and open time: a mountain climbed at midnight, a fjord crossed under sail, small fishing villages reached by boat, and the colour that shifts but never fades.

The shape of a day

A day on the water or high on the green peaks. Kayaking the clear sound, a climb at any hour the light allows, a sail to a small fishing village or a fjord safari. The fullest table of the year, carried outdoors in full light. The sauna above the sea and a plunge into it whenever the day asks, the sun still high. Suppers that close softly against the bright sky.

The gathering

The whole party out on the water or high on a ridge at the hour that would elsewhere be deepest night, the sun still on the sea; then a bonfire on the beach, fresh fish on the grill, and the long table carried outdoors with no reason to end.
